Dear Horatio,
Did you have to hit Archie that hard in the head? And why did you say "Kennedy" instead of "Archie" when you found him in Spain?

Love,
Tru

Well I suppose he had to hit him hard enough to knock him out and there's no gentle way to do that.

And why did you say "Kennedy" instead of "Archie" when you found him in Spain?
That bothered me for a while too. I've now decided that convention would probably dictate that they refer to each other by surname in public and reserve first names for, ummm, private conversations. I know the series doesn't really follow that convention but hey, what do they know?! ;)

That's reasonable, but it reminds me of another strange thing. When Simpson mentioned "your little pal Archie" before the duel, Horatio actually looked surprised and said "Kennedy??" Well, Horry, don't tell me you know half a dozen Archies! It's really hard to know what's going on in Horatio's head sometimes.

And yeah, Horatio definitely loves saying "Ahh-chie" in public ;)

You've given this some thought haven't you?! I think Simpson's use of Archie's first name is deliberately demeaning and obviously designed to wind Horatio up. Horatio replies with the more respectful and correct "Kennedy?" Although of course there is always the possibility that Horatio had a thing about Archies and he had a whole string of them! ;)

Oh no, now everyone knows I've rewatched the series a hundred times and spend way too much time thinking about it...

Maybe it's just me, but I think Horatio looked and sounded surprised when Simpson mentioned Archie. Maybe Horatio did have a whole string of Archies before Archie K., he just loves saying "Ahh-chie" ;)

Your cover's blown! Hang your head in shame. Or not perhaps... ;)

Really. With a block of oak that heavy, he should by rights have killed him (in the original story, he probably did brain the unfortunate epileptic sailor.)

"Kennedy...." I suspect that was for the viewers who missed the first episode. In that era, they probably would have called each other by surname unless they'd been relatives or at childhood playmates (or, *cough* intimate friends). But "Ah-chie" was probably too charming to resist.

When I first heard that *thud*, I was so sure Archie would bleed to death at the very least...

Everyone called each other by surname unless they are Archie and Horatio. That's one of my favourite things about this series :)

And it's the secret code of course, which we know and the people on the ship don't.

Of course, he also calls him Kennedy because these are classic 'explain to the dumb viewer' moments.

The secret code of True Love?

I can see Horatio reverting to formal/professional mode under situations of stress - maybe "Kennedy" is fallout from that.

I like your explanation - I can see Horatio going "OMGOMG it's Archie!!" inside, but because of the shock, all he could say was "Kennedy".
